He does so by providing this "course" to create and use an ideal double-paddle canoe. It's strip-built, over molds. And, the book includes drawings and mold dimensions, so you can truly build right from the book. In addition to building the hull, he shows you how to make a caned seat, as well as an elegant double-paddle.

Mac taught at our WoodenBoat School for many years. He would carry his canoe atop his minivan, and travel from Florida up to Maine at a leisurely pace, stopping off at lakes, swamps, and ponds to do a little exploring. He mentioned that he was at a pond in Penobscot (a pond that isn't the easiest to find entry to...) when another paddler recognized his boat / bright yellow hat, and shouted "HEY MAC". The devil is in the details. Boat carpenter John Brooks is a picky guy--a trait you want in your teacher: he's a builder who abhors bits of epoxy messing-up a nice long clean planking line. He's going to show you so many techniques for "getting it right" your head will almost spin. From his unique building jig and clamping system to his masking techniques, you're on your way to the land of craftsmanship. Several years from now when your out for your thousandth row and you lean forward on the oars pausing to just look at the boat, we'll bet you'll still smile at the sight. John knows your attention to detail in the building stage will pay-off in spades for years and years to come, and that line-up of planks, the way it all fits makes the difference.

Read the book, use the index to quickly find all those bits of information, and sharpen your tools because you've just sharpened your mind.

John Brooks spends his summers teaching boatbuilding, and his winters building boats. The book follows highly difficult maneuvers under sail, dangerous transfers at sea, the routine of everyday life, and the perils of heavy weather including ships wrecked and lives saved. All aspects of a spectacular and previously unpublished maritime tradition are considered, not forgetting the question of competition. European pilots, in general, preferred to operate as organized bodies to avoid the results of excessive rivalry. Nonetheless, crews still wanted to be the best, and when different nationalities worked the same stretch of water, in particular the Scheldt between Belgium and Holland, the inevitable disagreements could erupt into violence.

Table of Contents:

Pilot Schooners From Europe

Germany: The North Sea Coast - Elbe - Weser - Jade - Ems

The Netherlands: From Rinkelaar to Schooner

Belgium: Antwerp - Ostend - Nieuport

Dunkirk: From Korver to Schooner

Portugal: Lisbon's Muletas and Hiates
Pilot Brigs

Calcutta: The Hooghly Pilot Brigs
Open Boats of Pilots and Waterman

Southeast England: The Deal Luggers

Southeast England: The North Channel Yawls of East Anglia

Northeast England: The Humber Dusters -The Northeast Pilot Coble - The Tyne Foyboatmen

Scotland: Pilots and Pilot Boats of the Scottish Coast

Northwest England: The Pilot Punts of Famine Point - The Mersey Gigs

Ireland: Small-Craft Pilotage

347 pp., hardcover
10 x13"
hundreds of beautiful illustrations
ISBN # 0-937822-76-0

Cover art: a full-rigged ship approaches the Elbe lightship No 2, Caspar. Jan Adkins' young adult novel sends a spunky but alienated teenager back through time in "a storm without rain" to his New England home town in 1904, where he becomes the best friend, shipmate and co-conspirator to his own grandfather at his age. More than a fantasy, the town and times and most of the people the boys meet are factual. The textures, smells, sounds and sights of a vanished era return in this compelling narrative. What a young man learns about family, love and the march of time might just affect you as well.

Recommended for ages 10 and up.

by Jan Adkins
179 pp., hardcover
6 x 9"
ISBN # 0-937822-80-9

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0053/4098/7482/products/325-132-200_4b268c7d-64ce-4c07-9b71-49e44ad3ad89.jpg?v=1565100401
solstice
Solstice

A charming and intricate fable.
