This is the way Walt learned, and the way he has taught lofting for years. They offer the further benefit of helping you become familiar with the three-dimensional hull you are about to build before lofting and before committing your time and money. It's the easiest way to learn.

The lines section shows you how to select, interpret, and use building plans efficiently. Once you understand the half models and the two-dimensional lines derived from them, lofting is no longer intimidating. In the text, I give that same dimension then (in parenthesis) the dimension for a 1-1/2 inches-to-the-foot model. Because many of these are such improbably accurate dimensions as 17/64, you'll probably find it easier to use an architects's scale rule.

For instance, I mentioned using a 1/4- by 1/4-inch stick for this skiff's stem. We get his measurement from the plans, where the stem measures 1-3/4 inches by 1-7/8 inches on the full-size boat, by using an architect's scale rule on its 1-1/2 inches equals 1 foot scale. Like a computer, the architect's rule automatically converts real inches to scale inches (as long as you remember to use the correct scale), with absolutely no mental gynastics on your part. This makes it easy to build a model to any scale from any plans for which dimensions are given. Just roll the rule over to another scale, and build away. It's all really quite simple; just thinkng about it will keep you from nodding off in your chair, and may even help ward off early senility.

Review

If you should follow the book to its conclusion, building each model as it is discussed, by the end you will have a foundation in many of the techniques used by the pros.
--Peter Spectre, in WB #95

A fitting sequel to his popular "Boat Modeling" book. To many, the skill and craftsmanship of the builders who made them will never be forgotten. There is a talent that borders on art in creating a wooden hull from straight pieces of lumber. Steve Rogers keeps the art alive in miniature, with his beautiful models of these old wood boats. Through his work he demonstrates an appreciation for the design and construction of these boats, plus a gentle nostalgia for the times that they represent. In Model Boat Building Made Simple, Steve shares his techniques with the reader. A professional artist, Steve uses drawings and step-by-step color photographs and captions to make the process easily understood and followed. The materials needed can be bought at hobby shops, lumber yards, and hardware stores, and the tools are basic. Steve passes his years of experience on to the reader in a way that allows even the novice model builder to complete a fine model—a simple, yet elegant skiff—incorporating many of the original construction techniques.

Size: 8.5in x 11.0in | Pages: 64 | Color photos and drawings
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0053/4098/7482/files/FullSizeRender_2cfd0203-d2fa-435c-bf35-c564c6f3a3d2.jpg?v=1693573992
ships-in-bottles-2e
Ships in Bottles 2E
This book is an excellent course in a legendary art form; for less than its price, a reasonable model of a ship in a bottle can be made. Five projects of graduated difficulty are explained clearly step-by-step through drawings, black and white, and color photographs. Now in its second edition, this very popular title includes both new models and new materials. Historical background is woven into the instructions, giving the ships and bottles greater interest and authenticity. Guy De Marco leads the modeler slowly through each step, building confidence through the process and finishing with a work of art that is certain to invite compliments and conversation.

Size: 8.5in x 11.0in | Pages: 64 | 38 b/w photos, 16 color photos

Binding: Paperback / softback

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0053/4098/7482/files/FullSizeRender_198e47ec-d547-49ee-a54d-c8c5471ec4c2.jpg?v=1693574132
